It started as a fun, family competition, that would help the environment and produce some great local honey. I started by building my first four hives and filling them with bees in June of 2012, and have stuck with the hobby/business since then. It's rewarding, fun, and amazing to see what the bees can accomplish in a years time.
Most of my hives will produce, on average, around 20 pounds of honey in the "supers" per year, in addition to what they store in their brood boxes for winter. Occasionally, I've had some really strong hives produce over 100 pounds of harvestable honey in a year, but this is uncommon. Healthy, full, winter ready hives can weigh over 150 pounds.
